Site Selection and Sampling

• Systematic Sampling: This method involves selecting sites or individuals at regular, predetermined intervals along a transect line or grid. It is useful for observing changes over a spatial gradient, such as environmental quality from a city center outwards.
• Random Sampling: In this approach, every potential site or individual within the study area has an equal chance of being selected. Random sampling helps to minimize researcher bias and ensures that the sample is representative of the entire population or area.
• Stratified Sampling: This technique divides the study area or population into distinct subgroups (strata) based on relevant characteristics, then samples proportionally from each stratum. For example, if 10% of a city's population is over 65, then 10% of questionnaire respondents should also be over 65 to ensure representativeness.
• Opportunistic/Pragmatic Sampling: Sometimes, access limitations or unforeseen circumstances necessitate selecting sites that are readily available, even if they don't perfectly fit a systematic or random plan. While less ideal for representativeness, it can be a practical necessity, and efforts should be made to choose sites as close as possible to the original plan.

Data Collection Methods

• Questionnaires: These are used to gather opinions, perceptions, or factual information from local residents or users of an urban area. They can include closed questions (e.g., multiple choice, rating scales) for quantitative analysis or open questions for qualitative insights.
• Environmental Quality Surveys (EQS): These involve systematically assessing and scoring various environmental features (e.g., litter, building condition, green space) at different sites using a bipolar scale. EQS aim to provide an objective measure of environmental quality for comparison across an urban area.
• Traffic and Pedestrian Flow Surveys: These methods involve counting the number of vehicles or pedestrians passing a specific point over a set period. They provide quantitative data on movement patterns and congestion, often recorded using tally charts at different times of day.
• Photographs and Field Sketches: These are valuable qualitative data sources that capture visual information about land use, environmental features, and changes within an urban landscape. They can be annotated to highlight specific details and support other forms of data collected.

• Hypothesis vs. Null Hypothesis: A hypothesis proposes a specific relationship or effect that the researcher expects to find, guiding the investigation. In contrast, a null hypothesis states that there is no such relationship or effect, serving as a baseline for statistical testing and helping to prevent confirmation bias by requiring evidence to reject the null before accepting the alternative.
• Quantitative vs. Qualitative Data: Quantitative data involves numerical measurements and statistics, allowing for objective analysis and statistical comparison (e.g., traffic counts, EQS scores). Qualitative data, on the other hand, consists of descriptive information, opinions, and observations, providing rich contextual understanding and insights into perceptions (e.g., open-ended questionnaire responses, field sketches).
• Systematic vs. Random Sampling: Systematic sampling follows a regular pattern (e.g., every 100 meters along a transect), which is efficient for showing spatial trends but can miss localized variations. Random sampling ensures every element has an equal chance of selection, reducing bias and improving representativeness, but may not cover all areas evenly.
• Annotation vs. Label: A label is a simple descriptive tag for a feature (e.g., 'litter'). An annotation provides a more detailed explanation or interpretation of that feature, adding context and analytical depth (e.g., 'Large amounts of litter near a playground, indicating inadequate waste disposal facilities').

• Justify Method Choices: When asked about fieldwork methods, always explain why a particular sampling strategy or data collection technique was chosen, linking it to the aim and hypothesis. For example, explain how systematic sampling helps show variation along a transect.
• Detail Risk Management: For risk assessment questions, don't just list risks; explain specific, practical ways to manage them. For instance, instead of 'traffic', state 'Remain alert and work in groups to ensure awareness of traffic and prevent accidents'.
• Distinguish Data Types: Be precise when identifying quantitative versus qualitative data. Remember that closed questions yield quantitative data, while open questions provide qualitative insights.
• Link to Geographical Theory: Always connect your fieldwork design and findings back to relevant geographical theories (e.g., urban models, sustainability concepts). This demonstrates a deeper understanding beyond just data collection.
• Explain Reliability and Validity: When discussing sampling or data collection, explain how your chosen methods contribute to the reliability (consistency) and validity (accuracy) of your findings. For example, using a null hypothesis helps ensure unbiased data interpretation.

• Ignoring the Null Hypothesis: A common mistake is to only focus on proving the research hypothesis and neglecting the null hypothesis. This can lead to confirmation bias, where evidence supporting the initial idea is overemphasized, and contradictory evidence is overlooked.
• Inadequate Risk Assessment: Students often list general risks without providing specific, actionable mitigation strategies. A mere mention of 'traffic' is insufficient; a proper risk assessment requires detailing how that risk will be managed, such as 'working in groups and wearing high-visibility clothing'.
• Biased Sampling: Failing to implement a robust sampling strategy can lead to unrepresentative data. Forgetting to consider factors like time of day, day of the week, or socio-economic variations in a population can skew results and undermine the validity of conclusions.
• Confusing Labels with Annotations: Simply labeling features on a sketch or photograph without adding explanatory detail is a missed opportunity for deeper analysis. Annotations provide critical context and interpretation, which is often what examiners are looking for.
• Lack of Theoretical Context: Conducting fieldwork without explicitly linking it to broader geographical theories or concepts is a significant pitfall. This makes the enquiry seem like a mere data collection exercise rather than a scientific investigation contributing to geographical understanding.

• Scientific Method: Urban practical skills are an application of the broader scientific method, involving observation, hypothesis formulation, data collection, analysis, and conclusion. This systematic approach is fundamental to all empirical research.
• Urban Planning and Policy: The data collected using these skills can directly inform urban planning decisions and policy development. For example, traffic flow data can guide road infrastructure projects, and environmental quality surveys can highlight areas needing regeneration.
