Why counting works

Memorize: $P(E)=\frac{\text{favorable outcomes}}{\text{total outcomes}}$ is valid only for an unbiased, fully listed sample space.

• Completeness and uniqueness are structural requirements: every possible outcome appears once, and no outcome is duplicated. Completeness prevents undercounting, while uniqueness prevents overcounting. A well-constructed grid enforces both by pairing each row outcome with each column outcome exactly once.

Conditional thinking inside diagrams

• Conditional probability can be interpreted as restricting attention to a subset of the diagram. Once condition $B$ is given, the effective sample space becomes only the cells in $B$, so probabilities are recalculated within that reduced set. In equally likely contexts, $P(A\mid B)=\frac{n(A\cap B)}{n(B)}$ gives a fast counting method.

Construction workflow

• Step 1: define stages and outcomes by listing outcomes for each stage in a consistent order. This prevents missing branches before you even draw the grid. Use clear headers so each axis of the diagram has a meaning.
• Step 2: build the grid by pairing every row outcome with every column outcome. Each cell should encode one combined outcome, such as an ordered pair or a derived value like a sum. This converts a multi-step experiment into a visual database of outcomes.
• Step 3: mark the target event by shading or circling cells meeting the condition. Visual marking reduces logical mistakes when conditions have multiple filters. Then count marked cells and divide by total cells if outcomes are equally likely.

Validation and simplification

• Check total outcomes against multiplication principle: if stage sizes are $a$ and $b$, the grid should contain $a\times b$ cells. This is a fast integrity test that catches missing rows, columns, or entries. If counts disagree, fix structure before computing probability.
• Simplify final probability after counting to communicate exact results cleanly. Equivalent forms represent the same chance, but simplest form is easier to compare and verify. Always perform one final reasonableness check that the answer lies in $[0,1]$.

Representation choices

• List vs diagram vs tree depends on structure and scale, not preference alone. A simple one-stage experiment is often clearer as a list, while two-stage experiments are usually best as a grid diagram. For sequential dependence or unequal branching, a tree may show probability flow more transparently.

Counting probability vs weighted probability

Frequent mistakes

• Assuming equal likelihood without justification is a major conceptual error. A complete sample space does not automatically imply equal probabilities across outcomes. Always separate "all outcomes listed" from "all outcomes equally likely."
• Confusing ordered and unordered outcomes leads to wrong counts in paired experiments. In many contexts, $(a,b)$ and $(b,a)$ are different outcomes and occupy different cells. Ignoring order usually undercounts events and distorts probability.
