The Conditions for Fusion

• Electrostatic Repulsion: Since all atomic nuclei contain protons, they carry a positive charge. Like charges repel each other according to Coulomb's Law, creating a 'force barrier' that prevents nuclei from getting close enough for the strong nuclear force to take over.
• Overcoming the Barrier: For fusion to occur, the nuclei must be brought within roughly $10^{-15}$ meters of each other. At this range, the attractive strong nuclear force becomes stronger than the repulsive electrostatic force, allowing the nuclei to bind together.
• Kinetic Energy Requirement: To bridge this distance, nuclei must possess enough kinetic energy to push through the repulsion. This energy is provided by heating the substance to extreme temperatures.

1. Extremely High Temperature

• Mechanism: Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles. At temperatures of millions of degrees (e.g., $15 \text{ million K}$ in the Sun), nuclei move fast enough to collide despite their repulsion.
• Thermal Velocity: The high velocity ensures that a significant fraction of collisions have sufficient energy to result in a fusion event.

2. Extremely High Pressure and Density

• Mechanism: High pressure forces a large number of nuclei into a small volume, significantly increasing the collision frequency.
• Reaction Rate: Even with high temperatures, fusion is statistically rare. High density ensures that there are enough collisions happening every second to maintain a continuous energy output.

• Dual Condition Rule: Always mention both High Temperature and High Pressure when asked for conditions. Mentioning only one is a common way to lose half the marks.
• Explain the 'Why': If a question asks why high temperature is needed, use the phrase: 'To provide nuclei with enough kinetic energy to overcome electrostatic repulsion.'
• Safety & Waste: Be prepared to discuss the advantages of fusion. It produces no long-lived radioactive waste and the fuel (hydrogen from water) is virtually inexhaustible.
• Earth vs. Stars: Recognize that while gravity provides the pressure in stars, humans must use magnetic or inertial confinement on Earth, which is technically much harder to achieve.

• Radioactivity: A common mistake is thinking the products of fusion (Helium) are dangerously radioactive. Unlike fission, fusion typically produces stable, inert helium gas.
• Energy Input: Students often forget that fusion on Earth currently requires more energy to start and maintain than it produces, which is why we don't have commercial fusion power yet.
• Neutron Role: Do not confuse fusion with fission chain reactions. While fusion may release neutrons, it does not rely on a neutron 'trigger' in the same way that Uranium fission does.

• Hydrostatic Equilibrium: In a stable star, the outward thermal pressure generated by fusion reactions in the core exactly balances the inward pull of gravity.
• Life Cycles: If the temperature or pressure drops, fusion slows down, gravity takes over, and the star contracts. This contraction increases the temperature, potentially reigniting fusion or allowing heavier elements to fuse.
