If the rod is on the point of tilting about a support, the reaction at the other support(s) is zero.
Take moments about the pivot (the support about which it is tilting).
This eliminates the unknown reaction at that pivot.
Questions may ask: how far along a plank is it safe to walk, or the maximum mass that keeps the rod horizontal.
If there are two supports with unknown reactions, choose the pivot at one support to find the other.
Read carefully which distance you are asked to find (from A, from B, etc).
Use common sense: a mass between two supports may not cause tilting.
