FAQ

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA is on a 4.0 scale where all classes are equal. Weighted GPA gives extra points for advanced classes (typically +1.0 for AP and +0.5 for Honors), allowing GPAs above 4.0.

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course grade point by its credit hours, add them up, then divide by total credit hours. For example: (A=4.0 × 3 credits) + (B=3.0 × 3 credits) = 21 points ÷ 6 credits = 3.5 GPA.

What is a good GPA for college admissions?

A 3.5+ unweighted GPA is considered competitive for most colleges. Top universities often expect 3.7-4.0+. However, course rigor, test scores, and extracurriculars also matter significantly.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?

Most colleges recalculate GPA using their own scale. They consider both the rigor of your courses (honors/AP) and your grades. Taking challenging courses with slightly lower grades often looks better than easy A's.
